SUBIC BAY has been recognized as a strategically important location in the Philippines that has long been a historical center of world trade. In the 16th to 19th centuries, Spanish explorers realized the potential importance of Subic Bay and established a coaling station and arsenal to service the imperial Spanish fleet. During much of the 20th century, Subic Bay was home to the US Navy, the largest and most logistically complex organization in the world.
